Canada will host an evening of performances on June 20, with work by artists Zachary Fabri (@zacharyfabri) and Zeelie Brown (@zeeliebrownlovesyou). This will be followed by a discussion between curator Gervais Marsh and Canada’s co-partner and artist Wallace Whitney. The discussion will reflect on questions regarding process, form, and materiality that animated Hurley’s practice, including approaches to redaction, reduction, utility, and the concept of tidalectics (following Barbadian poet and scholar Kamau Brathwaite). Marsh will also reflect on dynamics of interiority within Black life and modes of refusal, ideas which guided their curatorial engagement of Hurley’s work.

Denzil Hurley's To be pained is to have lived through feeling and Is and Isn’t: A Context for Denzil Hurley are on view through July 22.

A catalog of Hurley’s work with writing by Robert Storr, Gervais Marsh, and Wallace Whitney is available for preorder at the 'BOOKS' section of our website.
